Inking duties and Just like old times

Posted in SDR Comics, inks, the works by R.L. Bertulfo, II on August 23, 2009

My good friend Zerulean today handled me his 3-page pencils for a collaboration we are doing for the upcoming anthology. I have mentioned in the past posts about him, we were college buds before and we used to cook up our own superheroic comics back then, to practice our abilities and to waste time with. I was always the writer and the inker and he the penciller then and for our collaboration now the partnership is still the same. It’s almost 15 years since we done this kinda shindig again and I am really excited about this . I have been practicing inking over his work again today with a discarded piece of page he drew on and work from there then on and posted below. He changed his style drastically with this one with a lot of lines and hatches which I am not used to with his materials and as he said earlier it has been some time since he did a sequential thingee. It’s a learning process all over again for the both of us and I do hope I did justice to his pencilled piece when I’m through with all 3 pages. Here’s the practice piece we did. Comments highly appreciated.

Another thing, I’ve revised page 1 of the 6 pager submission that was mentioned in this post here, with this one here because I kinda did not like the previous one I did and I do hope I pulled it off somehow:

And here is page 3 2 of the above related story, the last panel is still unfinished with a very small detail of the antagonist destroying the building but what the heck I’m gonna post it anyway.

Nuff said. I’d better finish this up to page 6 before the deadline hits me and to top it off I have yet to learn to put word balloons on these babies. Geez. Wish me luck.

Oldies but Goodies pt. 2-inks and a sketch

You can read the first part of this post here or just freely browse the blog. :)

I have nothing better to post, been busy with finishing the Captin N12 Issue 1 dialogues/script and I was not able to sketch last week and unfortunately this week so what better lousy way to compensate by posting old fart art/sketches that I did way back 10 or so friggin years ago, pathetic me. I rarely do fan art then than now so most of what I found from my old boxes were some character studies or profile of what I (and the Zerulean, which will be part 3 of this post) happen to cook up with in me brain,  lots of ideas then on having my own superhero team or a really cool character or two then and maybe, just maybe I will resurrect and get to finish one of them now that me and the boys have our own do-it-yourself comic book house the Super Debil Robot Comics which I profusely advertise in my recent post nowadays. Image Comics was so popular then and it is evident in my sketches. Here we go:

Some YoungBlood influenced characters don’t ya thunk?! (Badrock ?)

This one I called the Emissary and I was hooked up with some Wild C.A.T.s storyline then, I forgot already.

This hear is Razorback (he is also in this previous blog post here), a pretty nifty combo of Cyber Force’s RipClaw and WildCat’s Warblade. I overly thinking of resurrecting him now.

I really thought Marc Silvestri’s Ascension character was cool and David Finch’s art rocks and still is so I made one me self which greatly influenced a comic book one shot 6 pager story that I did which the lineart work that I did was lost for all eternity en route hand carried by a friend of mine to be submitted to a Popcorn-esque comic book magazine here in Cebu then. Angels and demons have a special place in my heart also.

Another angel and demon piece, not inked, only pencilled this one and don’t have the heart to ink it for I was afraid I’d ruined it. This is the only piece that I thought I made a decent looking babe, and a demon babe for that matter and sideways and hugging the dude, and…ah, nevermind.

Here was my not so many attempts at doing sequentials with the Razorback character. Just a fight scene with no real concrete backgrounds hehhehehe. Lousy. I am still not comfy with doing a sequential now. Must muster up the courage soonest as possible or Motex will kick my arse. :)

That’s it then for part deux, f.y.i. I only scanned the most decent one that I could find, others was next to nada. Next post will be the collab we did back then when we were still in college with good old friend Zerulean.

Lady Trons gonna kick my shiny behind for this Fail!

Lady Tron's gonna kick my shiny behind for this Fail!

I was playing a tug-o-war in mind whether or not I’m gonna post this piece today but I posted it anyway for the lack of better judgement on my part. I am recently reading a Majestic TPB and came across Lady Tron in them pages and got me thinking, she looked easy enough to draw and stuff, with all the cyber crap 90% of her body is holding, yeah, I can pull it off. Unfortunately, no. I sucked at drawing women or cybernetically enhanced women for that matter. I make up a thousand excuses before I venture in with pencil in hand when it comes to drawing women. I tremble at even the thought of drawing one but every once in a while I save enough courage to actually do one and as always I FAIL miserably. This is not even a full body sketch. I even cropped out the lower half of her body just to compromise on posting this.

Well, I promise to do more sketches of women now and then even if I sucked and even if it kills me. I’ve done this self imposed sketch-a-day program to help me conquer my lineart weaknesses  so help the gods that I would atleast try sketch practicing drawing women in order to be more whollistic. I just can’t draw only men and weird thingees exclusively, that would be impractical. For some time in the future I would have to draw women whether I like it or not, much like backgrounds, and hands and feet plus  the lineart would be too gay, unbalanced without them. Hopefully I can upload a more decent one other than this. For now you’ll have to contend with commenting on this one.

Self – deprecation/observations:

1.Her neck is too long and skewed.

2.The leather jacket flaps are way too large to a point of dragon wings and wrong shading/lighting effect for it.

3.Cybernetic parts would’ve been more metal like than actual.

4.Her damn hair is supposed to be punk rock. Not teepee-like.

5. Boobs.Boobs. Boods.Work on it.

Nuff said. :)

Chrome Dome Bastich of the Spaceways

Chrome Dome Bastich of the Spaceways

Well, whadaya know, I’m back at this sketch-a-day thing with a gun held in hand and up temple I finally get to pick up the pen tonight and do this. I’m not gonna get myself stressed over this sketch-a-day and make this more into a sketch-a-whenever-i-feel-or-get-to-do-it. A good comprise you say? Well, fraggin dammit, I do so agree. Hehehehe. On with the program, this is a sketch of the great Chrome Dome in the Sky, the Sentinel of the Spaceways, the once herald of Galactus, the one Lobo will kick ass whenever they come to meet, the…you get the picture. I am really fascinated with this character eversince and I do hope Marvel would revive him and not just do an appearance into some other books here and there now and then. Got a little wild with them Kirby particles up there, to a point of no direction really and copped out with a birds eye view sort off and the liquid eraser for stars resulted to just random white-outs, geez. And wait, are those feet?! All in all, fun to do. Maybe I miss doing sketh-a-days. Comments highly appreciated guys and ghouls.
