Thank You! Komikon 2010

Posted in Comic Books, SDR Comics, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on November 20, 2010

I know its a bit late, week to be exact, but I just want to thank the Komikon 2010 guys and the Metro Manila komiks fans out there who bought and shelled out there hard earned P20.00 to buy Boy Sipok: Invades the Komikon edition and who in turn bought some other titles from the SDR Comics Booth (The Urban Animal no.1 sold friggin out, how cool is that? Fort Bastard sure is happy) there. Hope you guys don’t stop continuing to support our little Cebuano comic book scene here. I would like to specially thank Motmot and Suede and Bobols for making the comics available for you guys there by actively participating at the Komikon 2010, you guys are incredible, keep up the good fight as is our objective in giving birth to Super Debil Robot Comics in the first place and also, I finally got hold of Kapitan Tog Issues 1 and 2 and Sulyap because of you guys. I am currently plotting out a 22 page Boy Sipok related  stuff to be hopefully put out early next year, black n white interiors and color covers which will be a notch higher in quality than the previous two releases, so stay tuned or whatever (is anyone really reading this blog?hehehe) . nuff said. back to work m-effers! Mabuhay ang Pilipinong Komikero!

Boy Sipok now at the Komikon 2010

Posted in Comic Books, comics, SDR Comics by R.L. Bertulfo on November 13, 2010

As of this writing, the Komikon 2010 will be in full swing at the StarMall, Edsa today and damn it I couldn’t come to the event for reasons so naturally obvious, i.e. I’m broke or I don’t have the dough to show or I’m a loser, etc.etc.). I have not been updating this blog for some time now and it doesn’t mean that I have not done any arty farty stuff either, I was busy preparing Boy Sipok:Invades the Komikon Edition for SDR Comics under my own Imprenta De La Cucaracha Rebelarse Imprint and I seldom go online nowadays so I tend to let this blog go unattended and so as my other blogs (OMG! I have 3, friggin’ loser me) too but mind you I did not slack off as others might think or so I would lead them to believe. And the fruits of which I have now unleashed at the Komikon as we speak, or as I blog, or whatever. The point is that I have at least contributed something to the event in my own little lousy way and for that I am somehow gratified but it would have been cooler still if I were there, don’t you think? Well, fate is fate and such as such we leave it at that, there is always next years Komikon, hopefully. Thanks to Motmot, Suede and Bobols (the 3/4ths of the 3 Little Pigs (what?!) , aka the SDR Boys) for spreading the Boy Sipok virus to the innocent Komikon participants and for a measly P20.00 , black and white photocopied grass roots goodness, what more could a fanboy ask for. I’ll put a link here anytime soon for a CBR file version of this issue for Free download once I know where to host it. Keep posted peeps.

Some Cebu Comics History and a late 1st C3 2010 coverage

Posted in cebu, Comic Books, geeks, photos, SDR Comics by R.L. Bertulfo on September 30, 2010

Sorry for the lack of updates, I still have no internet at home and seldom nowadays do I go online and only if I am able, so this is a real excuse this time. As a boon or bane, this post will be friggin’ long so be forewarned.

The 1st Cebu Comics Convention is in its wake, awesomeness reigned supreme last Saturday. It was a blast meeting all the comic book fans/artist/aficionados alike. The 1st Cebu Comics Convention, or as aptly known as the 1st C3 2010 was a huge success thanks to all of you guys who attended and showed their support. The comic book scene is still alive and thriving here in Cebu and in the Philippines altogether. Kudos to the Big Ape Design guys (Tom, Suede and Bobols) for spearheading the event and giving it their all to make it a reality in this here part of the Philippines. The Cebuano Komikero has come a long way and I do hope others will be inspired to creating their own comics and really make it a more thriving and diverse Cebu Comic book scene in the near future.

It all started with the comic book “Elmer” by Gerry Alanguilan. Way back early 2008 if I am not mistaken, Sir Gerry announced in his blog, which I am an avid reader and still am to this day, that his Elmer comics were now available for us Cebuano readers and he gave us a link to some guys blog where we can order them off. This guy happens to be Tom “Motex” Perez who bought a couple of Gerry’s Elmer comics for his own consumption and initiated to sell off the extra copies of his to us lucky guys here in Cebu, spreading the love so to speak and spread it he did. And from that link that Sir Gerry gave, me and Tom started to correspond and met up near my place to get my stack of Elmer goodies off of him and we started to talk comics and how it would be nice to copy what the Manila Komikeros did to their scene and somehow resuscitate the comic book scene here in Cebu which was in a dormant state since the later 1990’s. He was working on completing his own thing, a Cebuano underwear wielding, condom capered Superhero, and naturally I pitched in to help him work on the script and dialogues so that he can focus on the layouts/inks and penciling and finish what he started. After which we decided to come up with a name to stamp the comics front page and thus, Super Debil Robot Comics was born. Aptly named from the minions of the arch nemesis of some popular AM Radio drama show about a bronze covered boy superhero we grew up listening with. Then came Rey “the Suedemonkey” Siasar to complete the trio of the SDR Comics Crew. He was the man with the plan oozing and burning like wildfire. Where me and Tom lack he filled it up abundantly in terms of connections, he knew the who’s who in the Cebu gung-ho active artist links. He’s cool up there with the great Harvey Tolibao and John Amor and then some. He then invited us to join in on the somewhat irregularly scheduled weekend Drink and Draw formed by the Istorya.Net comics forum group and connected us to other Cebuano artist. By August 2009 Captin N12 issue No. 1 was released to the public and ushered in for SDR Comics to release some more with Sugbo Jam Nos. 1 to 4 to date. From there the ball kept on rolling until the possibility of a Cebu comics convention came to fruition after the meeting with Sir Jonas Diego with the SDR Boys sometime mid this year and the next is Cebu comic book history naturally. The expertise imparted by him and some Komikeros up there in Luzon (of whom we connect to online on Facebook, Twitter and to their respective blogs) for the advices and the push that ultimately gave way to the success of the Comicon here, their help was invaluable and their support unwavering. The gesture in by coming here at their own expense and help out in whatever they can (the likes of Sir Jonas Diego, Sir Gerry and wife Ilyn Alanguilan, the great Manix Abrera and Hazel Manzano, Ariel Atienza and the Komikon hordes and the bad boys of Philippine Comics namely Harvey Tolibao, Heubert Khan Michael, Carlo Pagulayan, Luis Antonio, Stephen Segovia, Ariel Padilla and their horde) made us feel the camaraderie, the fun and the seriousness of it all. The Philippine Comics Industry is alive and kicking and to be part of it once and for all is a very fulfilling vindication.

Enough of the raves, here are some pics via my cam of the event:

Had my copy of Elmer and Boldstars signed early by the great Manong Gerry Alanguilan.

The booth of our very own Overactive Ink guys, a powerhouse of artist be it traditional media, computer generated, flash media, animation, you name it they make it and with attitude to boot. Make us proud that they are on our side of the fence.

Heres a pic of the early birds of the comicon at around 11:00 a.m. a more calmer hustle and bustle.

Heres a pic again of the crowd but later on in the afternoon, a more jam packed organized chaos a brewing now.

A lot of Cosplayers show their support and are in full force in attendance, cosplaying stemmed from comics I believe and they have all the right to be there. The Panday rendition was hands down the most unique next to the marshmallow guy.

And with me here is Elton Espinosa who’s a Sugbo Jam veteran helping out on the booth, he’s been contributing to it since issue 1. here is the SDR comics booth, sparse with only the Unathorized(more on that maybe on some later post) copies of my own Boy Sipok Komiks selling for only P10.00 at 16-pages cover to back cover, the cheapest on sale on that event, a 100% Visaya komiks, you can download the comicbook file here for FREE If you want to peruse it. The other SDR guys Motex and Suede were busy making sure the comicon was in full swing (they’re the guys who made it happen) and were not present at the booth so its highly understandable. (Note: Sugbo Jam No. 4 Free Edition came very late at around 5:00 P.M. already to be distributed to the public, sorry guys)

Signing and sketching something for someone in the crowd, I bet they were (insert lewd language here) of the sketch that we came up with. The light of joy vanished before there eyes upon claiming the sketch. hehehehee.

The wife winning a Heubert Khan Michael sketch of Catwoman, how awesome can it get!!! Naturally I inherited the piece from her after the convention.

Here is Boy Sipok Converse style, actually finished this small painted piece early dawn of the Convention day at around 2:30 a.m. It was the hardest thing to draw coz I never painted anything in my life and let alone painted it on a Converse Chuck’s canvass, it was a very learning experience with a lot of stops and turns before completion. I was planning on painting up more of it but I was really sleepy already at that time. Maybe next time I’d do better.

With the great Manix Abrera of Kikomachine Komiks fame. I finally get to meet and chat with guy and like what the others are saying about him, what a down-to-earth person he is, humble but definitely on rockstar status in my book, asteeg!

With Callwork Comix creator fame Hazel “Ms. Charming” Manzano. The only woman comics creator, aside from our very own Kat, present during the event. Thanks for the Dr. Yap comics freebie, it was a good read as you said it would be.

The great Kat Layno-Lewis of Overactive Ink, busy sketching for her multitude of satisfied fans during the Comicon and me one of the many. Thanks for the awesome Logan sketch Ms. Kat, much appreciated. (Hey Mr. Amor, where’s my SpongeBob-Venom hybrid sketch request?! heheheh)

Bromance a-brewin’ at the Comicon with John Amor and Gerry Alanguilan doing a live Tres Komikeros podcast for the crowd. I was half waiting for Sir Gerry to do a sudden “Hey, Baby!” number for the crowd but to no avail. He’s famous in Youtube for that, check it out.

The great Jonas Diego in the hauz with his brief and concise an introduction to comics presentation.

With Mr. Ariel Atienza of West Side Comics fame. So, we finally meet sir. Thanks for them cool comics.

Well, that’s that and that’s this. Like them Indian dudes would say, it was “Mindblasting!” fun. I do hope it never goes off steam now that the 1st Cebu Comicon is realized and it somehow touched a nerve in others to follow suit. See you guys in the next C3….hopefully.

Update: On Melancholy, Life, Limb and some oddly good cheer

Posted in cebu, Comic Books, geeks, SDR Comics by R.L. Bertulfo on September 9, 2010

Hello folks, I am not dead yet just coping with life’s trials and tribulations. Nothing that I can’t handle. Hey, gotta wake up and smell the carcass sometimes. Been neglecting the world, this blog and the internets for  that matter there are more pressing matters and decisions to be made and a lot of changes came thru this pathetic existence and it kinda disorients my daily happenings and mishaps. The day job demands, chronic illness threatening a lifestyle change, depression hanging around some near corner waiting patiently but  still a sliver of hope comes from expecting to join the ranks of fatherhood, a distant yet supporting family and just that nagging stubborness not to give in totally to all the negativity. Life goes on as they say, so, I better go onwards.

Haven’t really drawn in ages and a page or two I started drawing set for another Super Debil Robot Comics release I think will never see the light of day or in print. I don’t know if I my drawing mojo will ever come back. All I gotta do is wait timidly for now. The least I could do was to contribute to a collaboration I did with this guy (we did a collab piece for Sugbo Jam 1 also) and I thank him for it for finishing the 10-page lineart as quickly as he surely can. All shortcomings to be worked out (i.e. dialogues/scripting/lettercraft) are now up to me to overcome and (believe me I got much to write onto his layouts starting today) finish the story we started ready for Sugbo Jam No. 4 to come out this September 25, 201o and I do hope the SDR guys would wait on it.

Enough with my pathetic predicament and on to a more lively note, speaking of September 25th and why that specific date to release the comicbook, well, the 1st Cebu Comics Convention is finally pushing thru on that momentous day due solely to the hard work done by the great SuedeMonkey and Motmot and Bobols. Awesome guys to pull teeth to make that event possible. Salutations are in order for these guys. And we really hope to see you guys there come September 25th and witness the event. Take a look at the awesome preview of things to come below:

Makes any geek tingle in anticipation doesn’t it. Nuff said.

Captin N12 Has Arrived!!!

Posted in cebu, Comic Books, pinoy, SDR Comics, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on July 31, 2009

Click on the image to view the original post (look how shiny they are, brings tears to thine eyes!)

It’s finally here folks (and right on schedule I believe), like it or not and yes for only P50.00 bucks. Don’t mind rationalizing the consequences of buying the book, it’s all but worth it. Its like buying a bottle of beer and some pulutan nuts or a short time nookie at TMS Lodge (as others have told me mind you) but only with this baby its a keeper. Releasing Captin N12 in the wild is an event itself because we at SDR Comics in some way, small or large, hold the beacon of a once dead comic book scene here in Cebu and we do so hope we can make more of the like so that not only will Manila be our only thriving area for local comic book goodness but let them reckon that the Queen City of the South has something to offer as well. Trust me like you trust a certain brand of a popular condom. I’m really happy for this guy here for it is his labor of creation (or as his title post suggested here), I have yet to know the feeling man. Soonest I hope.

If you wanna get one of these babies up and if you are a local resident of Cebu then there’s no problem, just contact us via email and lets decide where we would meet up and where within the cities limits. I will be posting also the local sightings of Captin N12 Issues where you can get it at your convenience. For orders outside Cebu, we can arrange something for sure so don’t you worry true believers (copyright Stan the man Lee) just drop us a line and we will be happy to accommodate whatever dark fantasies you may harbor.

Also, as I have always mentioned in forums or in this here humble blog of mine. If you (and that is if you are from Cebu) have some comic book creation dusting about somewhere, consider us and we might come to an agreement to breath life on you masterpiece. Let SDR Comics publish it for you. We need all the help we can get to keep this movement thriving. Peace!

p.s.

We at SDR Comics now have a discussion board at Google Groups. Lets get acquainted there and decide on some issues percolating in and around SDR Comics and the Cebu comic book scene. Have a Google account?Join us, click here.
