Update: On Melancholy, Life, Limb and some oddly good cheer

Posted in cebu, Comic Books, geeks, SDR Comics by R.L. Bertulfo on September 9, 2010

Hello folks, I am not dead yet just coping with life’s trials and tribulations. Nothing that I can’t handle. Hey, gotta wake up and smell the carcass sometimes. Been neglecting the world, this blog and the internets for  that matter there are more pressing matters and decisions to be made and a lot of changes came thru this pathetic existence and it kinda disorients my daily happenings and mishaps. The day job demands, chronic illness threatening a lifestyle change, depression hanging around some near corner waiting patiently but  still a sliver of hope comes from expecting to join the ranks of fatherhood, a distant yet supporting family and just that nagging stubborness not to give in totally to all the negativity. Life goes on as they say, so, I better go onwards.

Haven’t really drawn in ages and a page or two I started drawing set for another Super Debil Robot Comics release I think will never see the light of day or in print. I don’t know if I my drawing mojo will ever come back. All I gotta do is wait timidly for now. The least I could do was to contribute to a collaboration I did with this guy (we did a collab piece for Sugbo Jam 1 also) and I thank him for it for finishing the 10-page lineart as quickly as he surely can. All shortcomings to be worked out (i.e. dialogues/scripting/lettercraft) are now up to me to overcome and (believe me I got much to write onto his layouts starting today) finish the story we started ready for Sugbo Jam No. 4 to come out this September 25, 201o and I do hope the SDR guys would wait on it.

Enough with my pathetic predicament and on to a more lively note, speaking of September 25th and why that specific date to release the comicbook, well, the 1st Cebu Comics Convention is finally pushing thru on that momentous day due solely to the hard work done by the great SuedeMonkey and Motmot and Bobols. Awesome guys to pull teeth to make that event possible. Salutations are in order for these guys. And we really hope to see you guys there come September 25th and witness the event. Take a look at the awesome preview of things to come below:

Makes any geek tingle in anticipation doesn’t it. Nuff said.

2.5×3.5 week

Posted in fan art, sketch card, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on November 21, 2009

Hey, before I babble on. The Sugbo Jam No.1 is still available and if you folks don’t have a copy yet, better get going and grab one and lets be done with it. Help us komikeros to thrive in our own little non-threatening comic book scene here in Cebu and make our country proud like this guy here.

Anyways! (copyright by Motmot) Out of sheer boredom and I’ve got nothing better to do after the day job so this week has been kinda productive, artwise, in a way. When I am lazying out in bed reading and listening to my trusty iPod and zoning out over the week I decided to sketch a bit. Feeling guilty over the fact that I haven’t drawn for some time since the Sugbo Jam project kicked off and a lot of stack pile of pre-cut vellum 2.5×3.5 vellum boards hanging around collecting dust within arms reach I instinctively doodle a bit and stretch them stubborn drawing muscles of mine for kicks which led to the sketches below heavily inspired by Kikomachine Komiks Vol. 5 which was the one I was reading recently, kudos to Sir Manix…..

….which led to some off beat cartoony sketches below:

…which led to some superhero characters rendered unlike my usual style which I kinda like and will be developing later on over the weekend hopefully if all goes well. Maybe it was influenced by my reading online alternative comic book artist works:

…overall an interesting week for sketching. By the way, 2.5×3.5 sketch cards are still a pain to draw on but I am happy to say that I am getting the hang of it somehow, backgrounds and coloring this babies up still is a thorn on my side though. Comments and suggestions are highly appreciated on this one. Till next. Nuff said.

Sketch Card try out pt.1

Posted in fan art, sketch card by R.L. Bertulfo on September 23, 2009

Last Saturday’s meet up with Cebuano Komikeros made an impression on me and the boys specially the awesome John was there, but what intrigued us was what the great Kat was doing and making money out of and that is drawing sketch cards. It peaked our interest to no end and made us decide to practice on doing some of it ourselves for kicks and maybe some due compensation. Aside from the Sugbo Jam deadline we manage yet again to make room for trying out on drawing on a typical sketch card of 2.5×3.5 inch board and to think drawing on huger paper was hard this one seems harder. To cram something on a tiny drawing area is a feat in itself and just by looking at forums and other related sites on the matter those guys are pretty damn good at it, skething, inking and to coloring it all in there. Kudos. Below are my feeble attempts at doing a sketch card art minus the colors for now till I find some suitably cheap yet effective marker to color it with. Hope I can pull it off. (tnx Motex for the vellum boards)

Unprepared–My sequential Oddventures

Posted in comics, SDR Comics, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on August 18, 2009

I haven’t been posting much lately because of reasons posted in the last post here but what the heck, might as well post something even if its half baked, I’ve been posting crap since day one why not stop now. I am really trying to do sequentials for the upcoming SDR Comics Anthology release slated this September and it is quite nearing now that I am kinda stressed lately eventhough its just a deadline that we guys at SDR Comics are trying to set us up so that we have to push through any project we happen to be partaking. It is self-imposed therefore my stress levels are self-imposed also. Anyways, here are two pages worth of my stab at doing sequential art a.k.a. comic book story telling. Notice that I posted no dialogues whatsoever and been wanting too just to make it more clear the story I have in mind but alas, me no expert on them things as putting word balloons via digital and I am trying to learn the ropes per se nowadays, they say Corel Draw does a better job at doing this and for now I am reading the Help Section of it and left feeling unhelped in the process. So for now, minus the dialogue/word balloons.

Look Ma! No balloons! Geezz...crap crap crap. As for the art, crap still
Look Ma! No balloons! Geezz…crap crap crap. As for the art, crap still

The first piece here is a one-pager story kinda like a vignette of sorts akin to that of prose.  I am entitling it “Gladiator” and hoping that its kinda obvious at first glance. Its like a scene from a memory and I hope to do more of the like soonest when I get the hang of things. Notice (like anyone flying f@#$ cares) that I did a different style approach to this one, just black areas all over albeit too much and no visible cross-hatchings.

OMFG! Pathetic excuse for buildings and structures, Que Horror!
OMFG! Pathetic excuse for buildings and structures, Que Horror!

This one is gonna be a six-pager one shot story to be entitled “All in a Days Work” and I do hope so, in my mind it already is that is. Page two is on its way. Different approach as to the first one.  I have come to a conclusion that I will draw in a certain way whatever the mood takes me on the job at hand. I just make do of what I can come up with in the first place and just Go!Go!Go! like an energizer bunny and after its done then life goes on so to speak. Make up the next time. Drawing structures and backgrounds are friggin hard I tell ya, its not for the faint hearted. I am even struggling with anatomy the more so with perspectives and backgrounds. Its a punishing affair but a great learning experience. What better way to learn that to do it first hand no matter how pathetic your version of some thing here and there just pray to the gods that whatever you drew on the page would somehow get through with the readers and make them go Ah! OIC! and not WTF! That’s not a tree!

These will be included hopefully in the anthology come September. Must pull it off, must not give in, must think I can do it.

Captin N12 Has Arrived!!!

Posted in cebu, Comic Books, pinoy, SDR Comics, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on July 31, 2009

Click on the image to view the original post (look how shiny they are, brings tears to thine eyes!)

It’s finally here folks (and right on schedule I believe), like it or not and yes for only P50.00 bucks. Don’t mind rationalizing the consequences of buying the book, it’s all but worth it. Its like buying a bottle of beer and some pulutan nuts or a short time nookie at TMS Lodge (as others have told me mind you) but only with this baby its a keeper. Releasing Captin N12 in the wild is an event itself because we at SDR Comics in some way, small or large, hold the beacon of a once dead comic book scene here in Cebu and we do so hope we can make more of the like so that not only will Manila be our only thriving area for local comic book goodness but let them reckon that the Queen City of the South has something to offer as well. Trust me like you trust a certain brand of a popular condom. I’m really happy for this guy here for it is his labor of creation (or as his title post suggested here), I have yet to know the feeling man. Soonest I hope.

If you wanna get one of these babies up and if you are a local resident of Cebu then there’s no problem, just contact us via email and lets decide where we would meet up and where within the cities limits. I will be posting also the local sightings of Captin N12 Issues where you can get it at your convenience. For orders outside Cebu, we can arrange something for sure so don’t you worry true believers (copyright Stan the man Lee) just drop us a line and we will be happy to accommodate whatever dark fantasies you may harbor.

Also, as I have always mentioned in forums or in this here humble blog of mine. If you (and that is if you are from Cebu) have some comic book creation dusting about somewhere, consider us and we might come to an agreement to breath life on you masterpiece. Let SDR Comics publish it for you. We need all the help we can get to keep this movement thriving. Peace!

p.s.

We at SDR Comics now have a discussion board at Google Groups. Lets get acquainted there and decide on some issues percolating in and around SDR Comics and the Cebu comic book scene. Have a Google account?Join us, click here.

Camphone : Boredom in Black n’ White

Posted in mobile phones, photos by R.L. Bertulfo on July 24, 2009

Inspired by this bloggers post here and bored altogether. So why not post one of my own via my phone camera only and not some cool DSLR coz my cellphone (an aging SE P1i)  is practically with me all the time and why not use it’s pathetic camera for kicks from time to time when the photographic muse hits me.

Repost from SDR—Captain N12 Pin-up

Posted in cebu, fan art, lineart, SDR Comics, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on June 29, 2009

Just a repost, you can read the full rant here. This is my pin-up contribution to the upcoming Captain N12 issue No. 1 coming this July 2009 hopefully by our little do-it-yourself indie release for Super Debil Robot Comics. A little background, Captain N12 is the creation of  Mr. Tom Perez and he is a mysitical underwear and condom for spandex wearing Cebuano Superhero (as indulgingly conjured and intended by the mind of his creator) and if you are intrigued then hopefully you’ll get a glimpse of him sometime soonest.

The Streetcleaner revised and soon to be again

Posted in inks, SDR Comics, sketches, the works, Uncategorized by R.L. Bertulfo on June 1, 2009

Just want to make a heads up to the SDR Blog, it’s been updated with updates (no pun intended 🙂 ) to the so called whereabouts of each of our still yet incoherent projects therein, this one is my post there but feel free to check the others post. Click the link for some good lovin’ —–>>> Subject to change withour Prior Notice <<<—- .

Enough about them, now what’s up with me you might ask :).

Well, over the weekend we (that is the SDR collective of 4 but emphasizing on the 3 this time around) decided to post to the SDR blog updates on our individual pieces that would soon see the light of day anytime soon or end up in obscurity or whichever comes first. This made me sketch/come up with something/mind bend the images posted below in order to readily comply to what we have agreed upon. And eventually made me inadvertently revise the Streetcleaner which I was going to really because I think it was kinda off  and made me think that it would be better to use the original character sketch to some other thing in the future. This revision, as stated in the SDR post, will be subject to change yet again, without prior notice or until I come up with something cooler but the name will stick and I’m not changing it.

We also decided that on every meet up we make we would have a brainstorming/psuedo study on sequential art with references to whaterver we can hook up with be it How-to-Draw-Comics for dummies or similar tomes and from what-I-have-heard references also.  In the process we can feed off of each others experiences and expertise and learn and do some more unlearning in the process of this thing that we have high regard for, sequential art. So every weeekend or so we have a meeting on the status of the project and drawing sessions right smack in the middle of it to keep things productive. Cool.

Below is the revised Streetcleaner. I am still slicing my brain on what style to pursue. I tend to be fond on the cartoony side which is evident to this sketch I did:

Little Cleaner

Little Cleaner

This is the sketch I did afterward, still afraid to ink it because of all the construction lines, honestly, I don’t even know how to pull off the strongest lines for inking, stupid me. I am still drawing it the same way, typical comic book hero style I guess and that just bugs me because I terribly hate it but I can’t shake it off with an ugly stick, not yet but hopefully I will or I’d best be somewhere up in some bridge or building hell bent on jumping off to La-la Land:

Revised Streetcleaner sketch

Revised Streetcleaner sketch

Clearly visible on the above image that I don’t draw/practice that much nowadays and my lazy ass keeps rearing (no pun intended again) its ugly head with productive procrastinating on its back daily to terrorize me. Note to self: practice!practice!practice! and then some. I have decided to make the Streetcleaner look this way akin to the Daredevil/Batman/Moonknight/and every vigilante by night kinda thing to make him look like he’s to be take seriously unlike the previous character design I did way back in some post. Again, hope I can pull this off me having no experience whatsoever on lineart/sequential art and even good story telling and all. I have a couple of story plots running around me feeble head that I hope I can put it to paper the soonest and let it be over with. The revised sketch kinda looks like what I am visualizin in my head, well, mostly 70% of it though and its a good thing I guess. But in all honesty, I am fond of drawing goofy cartoony stuff but I want to achieve comic book seriousness first so I am still finding the visual style so help me god.

Here’s an inked character study version of it, comments as usual are begging to be had, so fire away:
