Sugbo Jam : Komiks Anthology Variant Cover test 1

Posted in SDR Comics, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on August 31, 2009

This is a test run on a possible cover variant for the upcoming SDR Comics  Anthology me and the boys will be putting out with hopefully by the middle of September this year and it is aptly titled “Sugbo Jam: Komiks Anthology No. 1” and I am excited as always about anything SDR related. I’m still gonna tweak this up like loosing the pathetic background and definitely change the face of Lapu2x in this one, not happy with it. Nuff said, here is a preview and a test cover page for blog post sake:

Updates and then the usual SDR meet up

Posted in SDR Comics, sketches by R.L. Bertulfo on August 22, 2009

Yesterday was a holiday, me and the SDR Boys did our almost weekly meet up and discuss all things SDR related and future shindigs and whip our pen and inks and doodle amidst the chitchat. This time, like the last one, we hung out at McDo Jones and out of thin air decided to draw Hellboy. And here is what I came up with together with a Captin N12 sketch I gave to Motmot to ink on someday:

————————————————————————–

Updates:

Been busy since last night doing Page 2 and 3 of my soon to be submission for the anthology and by golly the self imposed deadline is almost up and due next week. Hope the gods favor me this time and get my lazy @$$ up and running till I cap it off with page 6. Probably post it tomorrow some pathetic previews. I actually revised page 1 from scratch yesterday and I am quite ok with the revised one.

Another thing, my 3-page collaboration with Zerulean is 50% done, meaning he already finished pencilling it and now its up to me to ink and put them captions and balloons. Can’t wait to start inking on it tomorrow. It will be awesome.

Finally, the SDR Comics will hopefully finalize a contract next week to a well known comics outlet in Manila if all goes well and eventually Captin N12 Issue No. 1 will be available to our tagalog speaking brothers out there. I’m excited already. Wish us luck guys and ghouls.

Nuff said. 🙂

Unprepared–My sequential Oddventures

Posted in comics, SDR Comics, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on August 18, 2009

I haven’t been posting much lately because of reasons posted in the last post here but what the heck, might as well post something even if its half baked, I’ve been posting crap since day one why not stop now. I am really trying to do sequentials for the upcoming SDR Comics Anthology release slated this September and it is quite nearing now that I am kinda stressed lately eventhough its just a deadline that we guys at SDR Comics are trying to set us up so that we have to push through any project we happen to be partaking. It is self-imposed therefore my stress levels are self-imposed also. Anyways, here are two pages worth of my stab at doing sequential art a.k.a. comic book story telling. Notice that I posted no dialogues whatsoever and been wanting too just to make it more clear the story I have in mind but alas, me no expert on them things as putting word balloons via digital and I am trying to learn the ropes per se nowadays, they say Corel Draw does a better job at doing this and for now I am reading the Help Section of it and left feeling unhelped in the process. So for now, minus the dialogue/word balloons.

Look Ma! No balloons! Geezz...crap crap crap. As for the art, crap still
Look Ma! No balloons! Geezz…crap crap crap. As for the art, crap still

The first piece here is a one-pager story kinda like a vignette of sorts akin to that of prose.  I am entitling it “Gladiator” and hoping that its kinda obvious at first glance. Its like a scene from a memory and I hope to do more of the like soonest when I get the hang of things. Notice (like anyone flying f@#$ cares) that I did a different style approach to this one, just black areas all over albeit too much and no visible cross-hatchings.

OMFG! Pathetic excuse for buildings and structures, Que Horror!
OMFG! Pathetic excuse for buildings and structures, Que Horror!

This one is gonna be a six-pager one shot story to be entitled “All in a Days Work” and I do hope so, in my mind it already is that is. Page two is on its way. Different approach as to the first one.  I have come to a conclusion that I will draw in a certain way whatever the mood takes me on the job at hand. I just make do of what I can come up with in the first place and just Go!Go!Go! like an energizer bunny and after its done then life goes on so to speak. Make up the next time. Drawing structures and backgrounds are friggin hard I tell ya, its not for the faint hearted. I am even struggling with anatomy the more so with perspectives and backgrounds. Its a punishing affair but a great learning experience. What better way to learn that to do it first hand no matter how pathetic your version of some thing here and there just pray to the gods that whatever you drew on the page would somehow get through with the readers and make them go Ah! OIC! and not WTF! That’s not a tree!

These will be included hopefully in the anthology come September. Must pull it off, must not give in, must think I can do it.

Not slackin’ off, no really…uhm..mebe just a little

Posted in blog filler, SDR Comics, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on August 10, 2009

It has been awhile since I posted something other than the happenings at SDR Comics and/or with the Captin N12 Issue 1 release. I was just productively procrastinating with scripting duties to the said comics and been passing the weeks churning out something plausible for the upcoming SDR Comics Anthology hopefully this September 2009. In short I was in “writer” mode during those weeks and boy its the same hard process as drawing. Currently I’m writing the scripts (when Motmot sends me the thumbnails anytime now) for Captin N12 Issue 2 pegged for release this October 2009 and aside from that I did some plots and story proposals for Suede and Zerulean for the upcoming anthology release and to top things off I am yet to write/plot/layout/draw something on my own for the said anthology.

I’m not complaining, mind you. It’s a great thing and it keeps my creative gears going…on to the wee hours of the night with matching stare at the ceiling sequence while awaiting sleep or insanity or whichever comes first. And to assure you folks that I am not slacking off just yet and for posterity’s sake, I am attaching a snapshot of my current makeshift work desk (actually it’s our dining table at home with a drawing slab forcefully slapped above it). Nuff said.

Sketcheroo Tuesday

Posted in SDR Comics, sketches, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on June 2, 2009

I don’t know if the title is right. Does the word “sketch” mean only pencils on paper or does it include inking over them? Be it hastily or haphazardly. Well, this here I did today because I felt like doing one during my office break (?!, yeah right). Just a character study on a sequential piece that I will be handing over to SDR as a 2 or 3 page filleroo to the upcoming Captain N12 release come July 2009 (woot!woot!). Bobo the Clown : Intergalactic Bounty Hunter.  I will be doing a character profile post over at the SDR blog as soonest as possible about this here character and on the Streetcleaner, when I have the chops and stomach to post something decent there. Notice that I am bordering my style now differently and hoping it would be best. For now just a sketch post. Thank you.

The Streetcleaner revised and soon to be again

Posted in inks, SDR Comics, sketches, the works, Uncategorized by R.L. Bertulfo on June 1, 2009

Just want to make a heads up to the SDR Blog, it’s been updated with updates (no pun intended 🙂 ) to the so called whereabouts of each of our still yet incoherent projects therein, this one is my post there but feel free to check the others post. Click the link for some good lovin’ —–>>> Subject to change withour Prior Notice <<<—- .

Enough about them, now what’s up with me you might ask :).

Well, over the weekend we (that is the SDR collective of 4 but emphasizing on the 3 this time around) decided to post to the SDR blog updates on our individual pieces that would soon see the light of day anytime soon or end up in obscurity or whichever comes first. This made me sketch/come up with something/mind bend the images posted below in order to readily comply to what we have agreed upon. And eventually made me inadvertently revise the Streetcleaner which I was going to really because I think it was kinda off  and made me think that it would be better to use the original character sketch to some other thing in the future. This revision, as stated in the SDR post, will be subject to change yet again, without prior notice or until I come up with something cooler but the name will stick and I’m not changing it.

We also decided that on every meet up we make we would have a brainstorming/psuedo study on sequential art with references to whaterver we can hook up with be it How-to-Draw-Comics for dummies or similar tomes and from what-I-have-heard references also.  In the process we can feed off of each others experiences and expertise and learn and do some more unlearning in the process of this thing that we have high regard for, sequential art. So every weeekend or so we have a meeting on the status of the project and drawing sessions right smack in the middle of it to keep things productive. Cool.

Below is the revised Streetcleaner. I am still slicing my brain on what style to pursue. I tend to be fond on the cartoony side which is evident to this sketch I did:

Little Cleaner

Little Cleaner

This is the sketch I did afterward, still afraid to ink it because of all the construction lines, honestly, I don’t even know how to pull off the strongest lines for inking, stupid me. I am still drawing it the same way, typical comic book hero style I guess and that just bugs me because I terribly hate it but I can’t shake it off with an ugly stick, not yet but hopefully I will or I’d best be somewhere up in some bridge or building hell bent on jumping off to La-la Land:

Clearly visible on the above image that I don’t draw/practice that much nowadays and my lazy ass keeps rearing (no pun intended again) its ugly head with productive procrastinating on its back daily to terrorize me. Note to self: practice!practice!practice! and then some. I have decided to make the Streetcleaner look this way akin to the Daredevil/Batman/Moonknight/and every vigilante by night kinda thing to make him look like he’s to be take seriously unlike the previous character design I did way back in some post. Again, hope I can pull this off me having no experience whatsoever on lineart/sequential art and even good story telling and all. I have a couple of story plots running around me feeble head that I hope I can put it to paper the soonest and let it be over with. The revised sketch kinda looks like what I am visualizin in my head, well, mostly 70% of it though and its a good thing I guess. But in all honesty, I am fond of drawing goofy cartoony stuff but I want to achieve comic book seriousness first so I am still finding the visual style so help me god.

Here’s an inked character study version of it, comments as usual are begging to be had, so fire away:

Mr. Clean The Streetcleaner

Posted in sketches, the works by R.L. Bertulfo II on April 18, 2009

dsc01381Well, I promised to upload/update something in this blog and to my unfortunate predicament my home PC failed on me yet again for almost a week now and hasn’t been resuscitated yet. I’m using my issued office laptop to post and surf the net nowadays and add to the insult, I can’t damn scan my sketch updates here so I am left with uploading the image you see above as a preview of sort. It is not a scanned image but a snapshot via my camera enabled phone so for that bear with me on this, for now.

As the title of this post suggest, I’ve cooked up a character and layout a 5 page intro of somewhat of Mr. Clean: the Streetcleaner. Firstly, naming him from a well known laundry soap is kinda lame but that’s whats stuck in my head when I drew him maybe because he’s one bald mother#$% and as the Streatcleaner, named also from a fave band of mine Godflesh’s release, he will  protect the city streets from evil-doer or something of the like. At night he will clean the streets of scum, thus, the Streetcleaner plus he will be a metro-aide by day. Nifty? Not! hu-hummm…So, hopefully it gets to be included in the so called initial release project of ours (unofficially joked around as The Three Little Pigs Production 🙂 ) if I don’t f@#$ up and haul my ass off to actually finish this piece and start drawing come June 2009. Mr. Clean: The Streetcleaner, as I have cooked up in my head will be a mixture of Lobo, Batman, Daredevil and the Spirit rolled into a haphazard character, 5 pages of it doesn’t really give the impression of such but I do hope I can squeeze something there respectable enough, it is however our first take on doing comics. It is hard as hell just imagining how I will get to finish it, its a very daunting task for us newbies and fanboys to take a stab at what we like or do something about it and not just be forever fanboys.

At the least, we (the 3 little pigs crew) did something to revive the Cebu comics movement in our own humble way. As far as I am concerned I will never tread and dream of becoming a comicbook artist in some foriegn publisher and do it for a living, its just not practical and I am next to crap in sequential art but atleast I did something (well, will be doing something, hopefully). Hope the other guys tomorrow when we get to meet like my proposal and I get the cut.

The Streetcleaner is Coming….

uhmm..updates?!

Posted in blog filler, the works by R.L. Bertulfo II on April 12, 2009

I haven’t posted in this here blog for nearly about a month now, been productive procrastinating most frequently, like setting up my current blog journal into some other free hosting site and my hands busy with work as usual. The good news is that relative to my previous post (here), the the most part, momot is almost done with his piece, pencils and inks and all, a 22 page wacky superhero story but the bad part is that I still yet to flesh out mine but not a surprise really for I haven’t done anything but cooking things up in my head. The one mentioned in my previous post is yet again put on hold and now I’ll be solely doing everthing from the pencils, inks, letters and story and all (gulp!) and making another story from scratch and I do hope so that I can submit it before June 2009 which is our targetted deadline. I’ll be posting some updates on it over the week so help me god. Another good thing is that the SuedeMonkey is gonna pitch in some comic art too to add to the initial release, so expect a 30+ pages in that issue.  Welcome aboard dude 🙂 your expertise are a great addition to the crew and before I forget, the initial comicbook release will be under the name ” Super Debil Robot Comics” akin to the very popular Cebuano Radio Drama show entitled Ramini: Ang Batang Bronsi related to my post here.  We had a few meet ups last month and things are looking up and up so wish us luck, we need it.  Now for the hard part, doing  my thing come June, geez….
