The Pencil Pushing Area — One Man's Work-in-Progress

A very late 1/7th Avengers Movie tribute

Posted in fan art, lineart, sketches, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on June 26, 2012

I’ve been meaning to post this one after I have watched the Avengers Movie. A very late post and something to update this dusty blog dontchathink. I’ve been busy all over updating this thing called life. Been away from my digital drawing board lately coz we recently moved in on our new place and mostly my things are still in the box but I hope it won’t be there forever, trapped.

This is basically a cop-out because I cropped the hell out of this one. It’s supposed to be a full body sketch of the Hulk in the aftermath of some rampage but I wimped out and cropped the whole thing up to hide my mistakes and thank the gods for photoshop.  I have sketched a couple of Hulks in this blog and I never seem to get tired of him. Maybe because he is fun and easy to draw IMHO, just go berserk with the pencils and make every muscle overblown and add a green tint and there ya go hehehehe.  Linework done in SAI and colors/crop/etc. in PS.

Crime Is Awesome

Posted in fan art, sketches by R.L. Bertulfo on April 30, 2012

Been reading Millar/McNiven‘s awesome Nemesis over the weekend and come up with a quick sketch coz it was that awesome a book. As always done digitally in SAI. Forgive me for the cop out shot, no arms and feet again and haven’t pulled off the Nemesis’s trademark smirk/smile as much as I would like  it to and basically its not that hard on the details with all the all white costume of his, its like drawing Batman in reverse heehehe. Did I already told you the book is awesome?Well, it is awesome. I like the cinematic feel of the comic book. Your like watching a movie reading this one. Now, if I could get my hands on them Supercrook books. Original sketch below.

Quick Sketch 1: The Imfraggable Hulk

Posted in fan art, sketches by R.L. Bertulfo on April 26, 2012

Just wanna post a quick sketch I did last night, done digitally with SAI experimenting on colors coz I rarely color my work but decided what the hey I ‘m in the process of learning things so I’ll add this color thingee while I’m at it, while experiencing the agony of waiting to watch The Avengers Movie over the weekend…next time I’ll post something worthwhile, I guess. 🙂

…and over the weekend

Posted in fan art, sketches by R.L. Bertulfo on April 16, 2012

…as promised, I wasn’t slacking out over the weekend this time. Here are some bat (can’t get enuff of them bats) sketches done, digitally done with Paint Tool Sai (loving it more than PS).

I'm gonna beat the bat crap outta you (insert name of villain here)

This was the first one done and the eye and hand coordination is still a pain when doing things digitally. I’m still getting the hang of things but I’m still determined mind you. Paint Tool Sai is awesome. I’ve heard of this nifty software for a while now but never actually tried it until recently and I’d wish that I did years back, its light and easy on the RAM and CPU side of things and well worth coz I have a very aging laptop to work things with (imagine working on things graphic at 768 RAM on a 1.50 ghz CPU). A lot of local artist I admire are using it for sketches and partnering it up with PS to touch things up like the great Kat and equally awesome Miko. Its an awesome tool. Now enough of the harping.

This one I was just doing the lines short and more hatchings than I would want them to come out. Over done things most likely coz I am still in the process of adjusting and still am. Looked kinda like my old style of drawing things which I swore to veer away for the nth time already. Notice the my attempts above and below are somewhat crop upped coz of no feet or the Liefeld syndrome (yay! idol) but I’ll make it up next time.

Hey, this is me yawning...really.

I’ve decided to redraw the first one and came out with this, more loose, more cartoony, more to my liking but still much harder to do digitally than the first one coz it requires less strokes and long stops in making the lineart or is it just me doing it wrong. Still gonna work out lotsa stuff like the anatomy part and shadows as usual and yeah, the dreaded woman anatomy and the dreaded (did I said it again?) essential backgrounds, all in all I’m back to square one and yet, loving it.

Well, hope you guys enjoyed it, critics are a darn a welcome. Nuff said. Till next update.

2.5×3.5 week

Posted in fan art, sketch card, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on November 21, 2009

Hey, before I babble on. The Sugbo Jam No.1 is still available and if you folks don’t have a copy yet, better get going and grab one and lets be done with it. Help us komikeros to thrive in our own little non-threatening comic book scene here in Cebu and make our country proud like this guy here.

Anyways! (copyright by Motmot) Out of sheer boredom and I’ve got nothing better to do after the day job so this week has been kinda productive, artwise, in a way. When I am lazying out in bed reading and listening to my trusty iPod and zoning out over the week I decided to sketch a bit. Feeling guilty over the fact that I haven’t drawn for some time since the Sugbo Jam project kicked off and a lot of stack pile of pre-cut vellum 2.5×3.5 vellum boards hanging around collecting dust within arms reach I instinctively doodle a bit and stretch them stubborn drawing muscles of mine for kicks which led to the sketches below heavily inspired by Kikomachine Komiks Vol. 5 which was the one I was reading recently, kudos to Sir Manix…..

….which led to some off beat cartoony sketches below:

…which led to some superhero characters rendered unlike my usual style which I kinda like and will be developing later on over the weekend hopefully if all goes well. Maybe it was influenced by my reading online alternative comic book artist works:

…overall an interesting week for sketching. By the way, 2.5×3.5 sketch cards are still a pain to draw on but I am happy to say that I am getting the hang of it somehow, backgrounds and coloring this babies up still is a thorn on my side though. Comments and suggestions are highly appreciated on this one. Till next. Nuff said.

Sketch Card try out pt.1

Posted in fan art, sketch card by R.L. Bertulfo on September 23, 2009

Last Saturday’s meet up with Cebuano Komikeros made an impression on me and the boys specially the awesome John was there, but what intrigued us was what the great Kat was doing and making money out of and that is drawing sketch cards. It peaked our interest to no end and made us decide to practice on doing some of it ourselves for kicks and maybe some due compensation. Aside from the Sugbo Jam deadline we manage yet again to make room for trying out on drawing on a typical sketch card of 2.5×3.5 inch board and to think drawing on huger paper was hard this one seems harder. To cram something on a tiny drawing area is a feat in itself and just by looking at forums and other related sites on the matter those guys are pretty damn good at it, skething, inking and to coloring it all in there. Kudos. Below are my feeble attempts at doing a sketch card art minus the colors for now till I find some suitably cheap yet effective marker to color it with. Hope I can pull it off. (tnx Motex for the vellum boards)

Wolverine Hair sketch

Hey Logan, overdid them hair now do we?

Hey Logan, overdid them hair now do we?

Just like friend Suede, been awhile since I flexed my drawing muscles lately even though I still got a way overdue sequential to be submitted for the Sugbo Jam Comics breathing down my neck and the project itself is way overdue as targetted by the SDR Crew. Well, here’s an improved sketch (compared from a previous post) of my fave knucklehead James Howlett. By the way, got tired of my old signature and liking this one instead and I think its a keeper 🙂 . I won’t babble on too much this time besides, I don’t have anything interesting to say this time. Comments are much appreciated folks :). Thanks for dropping by.

The Maxx is giving you the Finger!since issue number one

The Maxx is giving you the Finger!since issue number one

Hello folks, fear not, I am not through with updating this blog just yet. Just loosing steam is all. Been busy catchin up on my comics reading lately and took most of my time. I got to do this piece tonight after I helped a good friend scan his cool sketches to put up on his blog. It’s almost midnight and I am sleepy but fortunately I finished this baby up. For the uninitiated, this here is the Maxx, Sam Kieth’s most popular creation and one of my all time favorite read in comics. A homeless guy who thinks he is a rabbit and is Julie’s spirit animal (if I am not mistaken). that protects her from the outside and the metaphysical world that they happen to exist upon and all the wierd things in between panels. I just don’t why I like this big lug but early on when this character came out of Image I’ve been constantly updating on it and all things Sam Kieth in general. His comics are not your run of the mill type. Veering more on the indie and not the superheroic.

————————————-

Just an update, Captain N12 release will be hopefully this end of July 20o9 as scheduled and I am asked by the great Motmot to help him out in the dialogue bit over the week and psyched up on that but unfortunately I am still unable to do some sequentials and all I got to contribute to the release will be a pin-up as stated on my previous post, a bad thing, geez. Lazy/coward me I suppose but atleast I get to contribute something to SDR Comics in general. I wonder how the Suede is doing 🙂

Repost from SDR—Captain N12 Pin-up

Posted in cebu, fan art, lineart, SDR Comics, the works by R.L. Bertulfo on June 29, 2009

Just a repost, you can read the full rant here. This is my pin-up contribution to the upcoming Captain N12 issue No. 1 coming this July 2009 hopefully by our little do-it-yourself indie release for Super Debil Robot Comics. A little background, Captain N12 is the creation of  Mr. Tom Perez and he is a mysitical underwear and condom for spandex wearing Cebuano Superhero (as indulgingly conjured and intended by the mind of his creator) and if you are intrigued then hopefully you’ll get a glimpse of him sometime soonest.

Lady Trons gonna kick my shiny behind for this Fail!

Lady Tron's gonna kick my shiny behind for this Fail!

I was playing a tug-o-war in mind whether or not I’m gonna post this piece today but I posted it anyway for the lack of better judgement on my part. I am recently reading a Majestic TPB and came across Lady Tron in them pages and got me thinking, she looked easy enough to draw and stuff, with all the cyber crap 90% of her body is holding, yeah, I can pull it off. Unfortunately, no. I sucked at drawing women or cybernetically enhanced women for that matter. I make up a thousand excuses before I venture in with pencil in hand when it comes to drawing women. I tremble at even the thought of drawing one but every once in a while I save enough courage to actually do one and as always I FAIL miserably. This is not even a full body sketch. I even cropped out the lower half of her body just to compromise on posting this.

Well, I promise to do more sketches of women now and then even if I sucked and even if it kills me. I’ve done this self imposed sketch-a-day program to help me conquer my lineart weaknesses  so help the gods that I would atleast try sketch practicing drawing women in order to be more whollistic. I just can’t draw only men and weird thingees exclusively, that would be impractical. For some time in the future I would have to draw women whether I like it or not, much like backgrounds, and hands and feet plus  the lineart would be too gay, unbalanced without them. Hopefully I can upload a more decent one other than this. For now you’ll have to contend with commenting on this one.

Self – deprecation/observations:

1.Her neck is too long and skewed.

2.The leather jacket flaps are way too large to a point of dragon wings and wrong shading/lighting effect for it.

3.Cybernetic parts would’ve been more metal like than actual.

4.Her damn hair is supposed to be punk rock. Not teepee-like.

5. Boobs.Boobs. Boods.Work on it.

Nuff said. 🙂
