The Pencil Pushing Area — One Man's Work-in-Progress

2.5×3.5 week

Hey, before I babble on. The Sugbo Jam No.1 is still available and if you folks don’t have a copy yet, better get going and grab one and lets be done with it. Help us komikeros to thrive in our own little non-threatening comic book scene here in Cebu and make our country proud like this guy here.

Anyways! (copyright by Motmot) Out of sheer boredom and I’ve got nothing better to do after the day job so this week has been kinda productive, artwise, in a way. When I am lazying out in bed reading and listening to my trusty iPod and zoning out over the week I decided to sketch a bit. Feeling guilty over the fact that I haven’t drawn for some time since the Sugbo Jam project kicked off and a lot of stack pile of pre-cut vellum 2.5×3.5 vellum boards hanging around collecting dust within arms reach I instinctively doodle a bit and stretch them stubborn drawing muscles of mine for kicks which led to the sketches below heavily inspired by Kikomachine Komiks Vol. 5 which was the one I was reading recently, kudos to Sir Manix…..

….which led to some off beat cartoony sketches below:

…which led to some superhero characters rendered unlike my usual style which I kinda like and will be developing later on over the weekend hopefully if all goes well. Maybe it was influenced by my reading online alternative comic book artist works:

…overall an interesting week for sketching. By the way, 2.5×3.5 sketch cards are still a pain to draw on but I am happy to say that I am getting the hang of it somehow, backgrounds and coloring this babies up still is a thorn on my side though. Comments and suggestions are highly appreciated on this one. Till next. Nuff said.

Sketch Card try out pt.1

Last Saturday’s meet up with Cebuano Komikeros made an impression on me and the boys specially the awesome John was there, but what intrigued us was what the great Kat was doing and making money out of and that is drawing sketch cards. It peaked our interest to no end and made us decide to practice on doing some of it ourselves for kicks and maybe some due compensation. Aside from the Sugbo Jam deadline we manage yet again to make room for trying out on drawing on a typical sketch card of 2.5×3.5 inch board and to think drawing on huger paper was hard this one seems harder. To cram something on a tiny drawing area is a feat in itself and just by looking at forums and other related sites on the matter those guys are pretty damn good at it, skething, inking and to coloring it all in there. Kudos. Below are my feeble attempts at doing a sketch card art minus the colors for now till I find some suitably cheap yet effective marker to color it with. Hope I can pull it off. (tnx Motex for the vellum boards)

Hey Logan, overdid them hair now do we?

Hey Logan, overdid them hair now do we?

Just like friend Suede, been awhile since I flexed my drawing muscles lately even though I still got a way overdue sequential to be submitted for the Sugbo Jam Comics breathing down my neck and the project itself is way overdue as targetted by the SDR Crew. Well, here’s an improved sketch (compared from a previous post) of my fave knucklehead James Howlett. By the way, got tired of my old signature and liking this one instead and I think its a keeper :) . I won’t babble on too much this time besides, I don’t have anything interesting to say this time. Comments are much appreciated folks :) . Thanks for dropping by.

The Maxx is giving you the Finger!since issue number one

The Maxx is giving you the Finger!since issue number one

Hello folks, fear not, I am not through with updating this blog just yet. Just loosing steam is all. Been busy catchin up on my comics reading lately and took most of my time. I got to do this piece tonight after I helped a good friend scan his cool sketches to put up on his blog. It’s almost midnight and I am sleepy but fortunately I finished this baby up. For the uninitiated, this here is the Maxx, Sam Kieth’s most popular creation and one of my all time favorite read in comics. A homeless guy who thinks he is a rabbit and is Julie’s spirit animal (if I am not mistaken). that protects her from the outside and the metaphysical world that they happen to exist upon and all the wierd things in between panels. I just don’t why I like this big lug but early on when this character came out of Image I’ve been constantly updating on it and all things Sam Kieth in general. His comics are not your run of the mill type. Veering more on the indie and not the superheroic.

Just an update, Captain N12 release will be hopefully this end of July 20o9 as scheduled and I am asked by the great Motmot to help him out in the dialogue bit over the week and psyched up on that but unfortunately I am still unable to do some sequentials and all I got to contribute to the release will be a pin-up as stated on my previous post, a bad thing, geez. Lazy/coward me I suppose but atleast I get to contribute something to SDR Comics in general. I wonder how the Suede is doing :)

Repost from SDR—Captain N12 Pin-up

Posted in SDR Comics, cebu, fan art, lineart, the works by R.L. Bertulfo, II on June 29, 2009

Just a repost, you can read the full rant here. This is my pin-up contribution to the upcoming Captain N12 issue No. 1 coming this July 2009 hopefully by our little do-it-yourself indie release for Super Debil Robot Comics. A little background, Captain N12 is the creation of  Mr. Tom Perez and he is a mysitical underwear and condom for spandex wearing Cebuano Superhero (as indulgingly conjured and intended by the mind of his creator) and if you are intrigued then hopefully you’ll get a glimpse of him sometime soonest.
